Granted some of this is luck but this combo of skills has been doing wonders for me. No joke on this playthrough I fended off 3 Melonheads without taking a scratch just by tipping shit over, tripping them, switching to closer combatants, using the luring move (has much the same effect as creating obstacle), and just some really good hits with a cleaver. Doing that has lead to some great stuns that allowed me to follow through with some incredible hits. I think that by having the Strong skill you are allowed the option of "Create Obstacle" in fights which is incredibly helpful as it's more like you tipping shit over that ends up hitting your combatant. It is such a huge help to get that as it lets you get right to finding some more important items like some shoes, weapons, and maybe a lighter instead of constantly worrying about freezing to death. I never used to take Trapping but then I remembered that with the Trapping skill you can get the Dogman fur coat right at the beginning. I have found the Insomnia's effect on you is fairly minimal other than it being hard to stay asleep which can be countered if you have some sleeping pills. On this current playthrough I'm running Melee, Strong, Ranged, Trapping, and by also taking Insomniac I have Medic as well.
